No one was really very happy to see snow in March, but it did have a positive impact on the soil Iowa farmers will soon be planting.

The USDA’s first 2013 crop report predicts farmers will plant 97.3 million acres of corn this year. That is the most since 1936. Iowa farmers will plant an estimated 14.2 million acres in corn, which is the same as 2012.

Record corn acreage is expected in Arizona, Idaho, Minnesota, Nevada, North Dakota, and Oregon.

The news isn’t as good for soybeans; predictions are down slightly down from last year at 77.1 million acres.
