Two young girls are dead after the van they were riding in was hit by a train.

The accident happened just after 4:00 p.m. Monday in the town of Batavia in Jefferson County.

An Iowa State Patrol reports shows a van driven by 25-year-old Tara Lewman was stopped at activated crossing arms and lights at the train crossing. After some time, Lewman drove around the arms and that's when a train hit the passenger side of the van.

Troopers say a train stopped for maintenance blocked Lewman's view of the oncoming train.

Lewman's children, five-year-old Kallie Clark and four-year-old Erika Clark, died in the crash. One-year-old Jordan Clark survived. Paramedics took her and Lewman by air ambulance to Iowa City.

Troopers say Lewman was alert and talking with authorities Tuesday morning.

There's no word on the condition of Jordan Clark.
