Waterloo police say they know the identity of a driver who hit a child with a car then took off Monday night.

The crash happened in the 2300 block of Lafayette Street in Waterloo. Police say the eight-year-old boy only had minor injuries to his right leg and left arm before being released.

Police say the driver of the car is 31-year-old Justin Varney of Waterloo. Police haven’t found Varney.

Investigators say he took off on foot before officers could make it on scene.

Police also say Varney has a warrant out for his arrest on a probation violation.
