Investigators with the Polk County Sheriff's Department are trying to figure out how and why a car plunged into a pond Sunday morning.

Around 5 a.m. crews were called to the 800 block of East 1st Street in Grimes.  When they arrived they found a black Ford Explorer had gone into the water just west of the Grimes Tire and Auto Building.

Witnesses said the car had been westbound on Highway 44 when it crossed the median and the eastbound lanes of traffic taking out a traffic sign.

The metro dive team was called in. The submerged vehicle came to rest aroubnd 60 feet from the shore. When authorities winched the vehicle from the pond, they found the body of 71-year-old Eddy Clark inside.

Investigators are still trying to determine what caused Clark to lose control of his vehicle.
