The West Des Moines Police Department is working to raise money to replace a recently retired K-9 officer.

K-9 Rony retired after 9 years of service, during his time on the force he assisted in more than 200 arrests and found hundreds of pounds of illegal narcotics.

West Des Moines wants to continue and expand the K-9 unit, but a new dog, training course and equipment costs about $7,000.  The department hopes to raise enough money by July 1 so that the new officer will be patrolling the community by early 2014.

According to WDMPD K-9 officers decrease the time it takes for officers to search buildings and help alert officers to hidden dangers.
