Flags across the state will fly at half-staff on Friday in honor of a fallen solider.

Governor Branstad ordered all flags be lowered to honor Vietnam War Aviation Antisubmarine Warfare Technician Donald P. McGrane who was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery Thursday.

McGrane of Waverly had been missing since July of 1967.

According to the Department of Defense McGrane and his crew were on a search and rescue mission when their helicopter was hit by enemy gunfire and crashed killing all four servicemen on board.

It wasn’t until 2009 that the remains of the men were identified.

McGrane was buried with full military honors along with his crew.
