The chief justice of the Iowa Supreme Court has appointed an independent special counsel to determine if Iowa senator Kent Sorenson broke ethics rules.

Friday, Justice Mark Cady appointed Des Moines attorney Mark Weinhardt for the job.

Weinhardt is charged with determining if there is probable cause to believe a violation of a state statute of the Senate Code of Ethics happened.

Sorenson is accused of taking money for working on Michele Bachmann’s presidential campaign in Iowa.

Rules ban senators from taking payments so it doesn’t appear the candidate can gain their support though a job.

Sorenson denies any wrong-doing.
