A Des Moines man will spend more than a year in prison for cutting down valuable walnut trees on federal land.

Thursday, a federal judge sentenced 50-year-old Randall Walker to 15 months in prison.

He’ll serve time for cutting and removing 32 black walnut trees from federal property, leaving a mess behind. The judge also ordered Walker to pay restitution of just over $56,000.

Walker pleaded guilty to removing the walnut trees from several locations in Polk and Marion counties.
