A firefighter was injured while working to extinguish an apartment fire Thursday evening.

Firefighters were called to the building on 9th Street just north of I-235 in Des Moines around 7:30 p.m.

Officials say when they arrived they found flames crawling up the walls of the building and to the roof.

At one point firefighters were evacuated from the building as the floors gave way. "We had some people fall through the floors, so to be on the safe side I had to get everybody out of there to make sure everybody was okay," Chief Dan Burke said.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital, but his injuries are believed to be minor.

Officials say the fire likely started in the basement or first floor and quickly spread through the old building.
