The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigations has released the name of the man shot by a Waterloo police officer Thursday.

Officer Thomas Frein shot 39-year-old Richard Anderson of Cedar Falls around 1 a.m. Thursday morning. Police say he was shot because he threatened them with a knife.

Paramedics took Anderson to the hospital and he is expected to survive.

Frein is on paid leave until an investigation is complete, which is standard policy.

DCI says a decision about criminal charges against Anderson will be made once the investigation is complete.
