The former city attorney for Indianola has been arrested and faces charges for allegedly submitting false billing claims to the city.

John Hoyman was arrested Wednesday and is charged with first degree theft, fraudulent practices, and felonious misconduct in office.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety says the charges were based on a special report done by the Iowa Auditor’s Office. The report found Hoyman knowingly submitted false information on invoices to the city between 2006 and 2012. The invoices included time worked on cases where the defendant’s name was fictitious, allegedly pulled from phone books by Hoyman.

The report says overall, Hoyman overbilled the city by more than $90,000.
