A little rain didn’t stop the action on the first day of the boys state soccer tournament Thursday.

Pella and Norwalk in the 4-5 matchup had a quiet first half, until Pella’s Austin Van Genderen found the back of the net. Pella held on for the shut-out, 1-0.

In another 2A quarterfinal, ADM took on Waverly-Shell Rock. ADM just didn’t have it, Waverly wins, 3-1. Tons of Cub fans came out to cheer on Nevada and they got a good show. Daniel Buenrrostro rifles one in just 2 minutes into the game. MOC Floyd Valley answered back with 2 straight, but a Nevada penalty kick tied it up. One more goal in the final 10 minutes gave Nevada the win, 3-2.

Another group of loud fans were on hand to cheer on Backman Catholic and Des Moines Christian. Beckman controlled the tempo and the game for the win, 3-0. They move on to play Nevada.

One of the most anticipated metro soccer showdowns of the season lived up to the hype. There was a big crowd as Ankeny tried to upset higher seeded Johnston.

Ankeny was first to strike, but Johnston tied it up just after halftime. Both teams had plenty of chances, but it was Johnston it got it in the net for the win, 2-1.

Another metro team hit the field Thursday evening; Dowling Catholic took on Iowa City.

It was all little Hawks; they win 3-1 and move on to play Johnston Friday.
