A man was stabbed to death and another injured in the east side of Des Moines overnight.

A caller told police about the two stabbings around 3:30 Saturday morning.

Medics took the men to the hospital but police say 22-year old Frank Renfro Jr. of Des Moines died in the attack on E 17th and University.

Authorities haven't released the name of the second man injured but say the man required surgery and is expected to survive.

Although police say they don't have any suspects yet in connection with the homicide, they suspect the attacks weren’t random.

“There were several individuals outside but it appeared to be a group of folks who knew each other and they were gathered there for some reason,” explained Des Moines Police Sgt. Jason Halifax. “We don’t know what.”

Police say they took one witness in for questioning.

They do not know who committed the stabbing and the crime is still under investigation.
