A former top aide for Senator Chuck Grassley is now in the running to join him in the u-s senate.

David Young has worked as Grassley’s chief of staff for the past seven years before resigning last month.

In front of friends and family at Fat Randi’s Bar and Grill in Van Meter, Young filled out the paperwork to run for the seat Senator Tom Harkin will leave in 2014.

Young grew up in Van Meter.

He admits since he’s just now getting into the race, he’s behind presumptive democratic nominee Bruce Braley in name recognition and fundraising but says he has a strategy to make up for lost time.

“There’s nowhere to go but up. I quit my job and I’m slogging this out for the next 17 months all over Iowa, every county, multiple times,” says Young.

He will get some company in the race for senate Monday when republican Matt Whitaker officially announces his candidacy for U.S. senate.

Whitaker is a former U.S. attorney but now works as an attorney in private practice.
