A Des Moines attorney is officially entering the race to fill Senator Tom Harkin’s seat.

Republican Matthew Whitaker announced his candidacy during a Monday morning press conference at an Ankeny plastics manufacturer.

Whitaker grew up in Ankeny and played football for the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Before going into private practice, he served as U.S. Attorney for the southern district of Iowa from 2004 to 2009.

Whitaker says one of his priorities is cutting government spending. He also says he wants to cut foreign aid, especially to Egypt.

He will face a republican primary against David Young, who announced his candidacy this weekend.

On the democratic side Representative Bruce Braley is the only one who has officially entered the race for the seat.
