Many recognize the cross fit community for their intense workouts. Friday night, Crossfit Ankeny did an especially brutal workout, and it drew more than 200 people to the gym, including Olympic Gold Medalist Gabby Douglas.
“The hero workout is all about giving max effort for those heroes that paid the ultimate sacrifice and gave their life for our country,” explained Nathan Fulk.
Friday, they honored Corporal Jeremy Fulk. Jeremy's brother Nathan has been a part of the gym since day one.
“We were best friends. He was marine that served the country very proudly. And on august 1st of 2000 he gave his life to save two innocent people and paid the ultimate sacrifice and I’m just very proud of him,” said Nathan Fulk, “it means a lot to my family and I to be supported and have a big gathering in support of my brother and his actions.”
“It’s not so much a race against the clock, as it is going through the workout, thinking about what that individual might have been, what he was like as a person, what they`re family is like, kind of just getting a little bit intimate as you’re going through the suffering and kind of thinking what else did this guys do for me, that allows me to come in here and do this type of stuff in remembrance of him,” said Travis Parton, Co-owner of Crossfit Ankeny.
It's the members’ way of showing gratitude, and it's something Olympic Gold Medalist Gabby Douglas can relate to.
“It fuels the body and the mind. The mind is so powerful, if you’re doing a workout for someone, push yourself, ok I’m almost done I am going to do this for this person,” said Douglas.
Douglas is no stranger to a tough workout, but just watching the workout Friday made her long for her usual routine: “The first time I did I Crossfit I about died. It was bad,” laughed Douglas. But she said she would do it again, to honor someone like fallen marine Fulk.
“It’s definitely special and so honoring, and you know, I would even do the workout, because just working out after the marines, is such a treat. I would definitely love to do that,” said Douglas.
Gabby Douglas's host dad is actually one of the co-owners of Crossfit Ankeny. Friday night was also the one-year anniversary of the gym.
