The Iowa State Patrol is investigating a deadly three car pile-up on Interstate 80.  It happened around midnight Sunday morning near the Earlham exit.

Authorities don`t know how  24-year-old Megan Wakeham wound up driving the wrong way down I-80.  They are trying to determine if alcohol played a role in the crash. Toxicology results won't be back for a few weeks.

“It was a very difficult scene to come upon.  You've been in this a while, I mean, it's just tough to see that,” says Andy Nelson who works for Hanifen Towing.

One look at what's left of the cars and you have an idea what he's talking about.  The front end of Wakeham's Chevy Aveo is a mangled mess.  The State Patrol says she died after hitting a Pontiac Trans Am head on.

20-year-old Jessie Leeper was rushed to Mercy in critical condition.  Doctors transferred him to Iowa City where his condition is not known at this time.  Leeper's car has damage to both ends after a third driver rear-ended him.

49-year-old Lori Wallace's SUV is banged up, but her family says she was not hurt.  Wallace’s daughter says she is very “shaken” by what happened.  She isn’t the only one.

“This was a bad one, unfortunately,” says Nelson.
