A renovation project at a local theater is underway following a groundbreaking ceremony Monday morning, and the project has received another financial boost.

The first phase of the Des Moines Community Playhouse’s capital campaign will address issues to the facade of the 79-year-old building. Three-point-four million dollars had to be raised to get the project started.

At Monday’s ceremony, the Gabus Family Foundation came forward and pledged another $1 million for the continuation of the project.

Playhouse staff was joined by Iowa First Lady Christine Branstad, Polk County Supervisor Angela Connolly, and City Councilwoman Christine Hensley for the ceremony Monday morning.
