The governor’s schedule was interrupted when his state trooper driver responded to a house fire, Wednesday.

Trooper Greg Steffen was driving the governor when he spotted heavy smoke off Highway 163 near Monroe.

Steffen followed the smoke and came upon a house fire before emergency crews arrived.

Steffen provided first aid to the elderly homeowner who’d burnt her arm. He moved her away from the house until firefighters arrived.

Governor Branstad remained in the vehicle at a safe distance.

The incident happened on the same day a DCI agent was fired in a speeding scandal involving another of Governor Branstad’s state trooper drivers.
