A republican vying for a seat in the US Senate met her potential constituents Thursday.

State Senator Joni Ernst is on a six-stop tour of the state.

It started Wednesday with a stop in her hometown of Red Oak.

Ernst laid out her priorities to those gathered at Caribou Coffee in Waukee.

“I am a mother concerned about my daughter and her ability to have a job in a strong economy,” Enrst told Channel 13.

“I am a combat veteran and I’m concerned about national defense and protecting our citizens here in the United States as well as abroad and then also as a conservative making sure that those values that I hold dear are being fought for at a national level.”

Five republicans have officially announced their candidacy for the Senate seat being vacated by democrat, Sen. Tom Harkin.

Friday, two potential republican presidential candidates will be in the metro.

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul will be in Des Moines to meet with leaders of the evangelical, African-American and Latino communities.

Senator Ted Cruz of Texas will be at a different event. Cruz will be the keynote speaker at the Republican Party of Iowa's Summer Picnic.

It's being held at their headquarters on East Ninth Street.

Both are said to be considering a 2016 run for the White House.
