The Des Moines Register is reportedly slashing its staff.

A source told Channel 13 that nine workers are being laid off including five reporters.

Other employees are reportedly being laid off at newspapers elsewhere in the Gannett Company.

The Register recently moved into a new building and just announced a 40% increase in subscription rates.

When asked in May whether next year the Register would have the same amount or fewer staff reporting, editor-in-chief, Rick Green replied, “Jeez. At least the same.”
