Des Moines Police are investigating an overnight shooting in the Drake Neighborhood that sent one person to the hospital.

Police were called to the area of 22nd and University Avenue around 12:30 a.m. on reports of shots fired.

Police began checking the scene and found a victim at 22nd and Carpenter.

Paramedics took the victim to Mercy Hospital with at least one gunshot wound.

Lieutenant Chris Scott says it is still early in the investigation, but it appears at least part of the shooting took place in the area of 22nd and University near the Kum & Go.

Officers did find shell casings in the area and there was additional evidence the victim went down an alley to 22nd and Carpenter.

The crime scene is about a block and a half, which is making the investigation a bit more complex.

Lieutenant Scott said, “Our ident technicians are on the scene investigating right now to track back where the initial incident occurred all the way to where we located the victim of the shooting.”

At this time the name and condition of the victim is not being released.

Police do not have a suspect in the case, but they are interviewing witnesses and neighbors.
