It was a busy first day for police officers patrolling the grounds at the Iowa State Fair.

The Department of Public Safety says 23 people were arrested, all of which were minor.

The charges levied were for possession of a controlled substance, open container, public intoxication and disorderly conduct.

In addition to uniformed police, the DPS has added undercover officers to the fairgrounds.

“They have additional staff this year a lot of it undercover and behind the scenes you may not even notice but they are and fair goers are kept very safe by their presence,” says Iowa State Fair’s Lori Chappell.

People enjoying fair activities are encouraged to report any suspicious activities to authorities.
