Construction on the Grand Avenue bridge leading from Des Moines into West Des Moines could be further delayed after contractors made a discovery Monday.

Des Moines’ city engineer Jeb Brewer wouldn’t say what the contractors found but said it, “May have archeological significance.”

An archeologist will be on the construction site Tuesday to examine the find. Brewer says a report should be completed by the end of the week by the archeologist.

That will help determine whether there will be any more delays with the construction of the bridge.

Some lanes of the bridge were originally scheduled to open September 9th, but delays forced that date back to September 29th.
