Older Iowans can get a free cell phone to place 911 calls.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is offering the cell phones for people 55 and older.

The phones can be used for emergency situations like a car accident, assault, fire or medical issue. They are set up so 911 is the only number that can be called.

The phones were donated by the public.

You can pick one up at the sheriff’s Field Headquarters Office located at 6023 Northeast 14th Street, which is about a mile north of I-80.

You can pick it up anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
