One person is dead after he was hit by a train early Wednesday morning.

It happened in Kellogg, just east of Newton.

The train’s conductor called emergency dispatchers just after 1 a.m., and told them he believed the train hit a person on the tracks. The conductor says they observed a body lying across the tracks and activated the horn and the brakes. The individual didn’t move and the train was unable to stop before hitting him.

The Kellogg Fire Department and the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department responded to the accident.

A short time later they found the body of 18-year-old Kyle Smith of Kellogg.

Jasper County Sheriff John Halferty says at this point the incident appears to be just an accident.

Halferty said, “We’re still gaining information and trying to determine a timeline as to what this individual was doing up to that point.”

The Sheriff’s Department is being assisted by investigators from he train company.  The train is operated by Iowa Interstate.
