Des Moines fire fighters made quick work of an afternoon house fire.

It happened just after 5 p.m. Thursday afternoon at the 1700 block of Clark Street.

Authorities are reporting that all occupants weren’t home at the time of the blaze. However, fire officials say a couple of pets did die.

They say it started in the kitchen but has been contained. Crews are working to ventilate the home.

An arson team is being called in to investigate.

Crews had to close down parts of MLK and 17th Street.

Authorities say the damage caused around $50,000 worth of damage.
