Des Moines’ Chief of Police wants to make sure if any of her officers pursue a chase, it’s worth the risk.

Chief Judy Bradshaw told the Des Moines Register that she won’t ban chases but she will be tightening the rules. She wants to make it easier for officers to call off chases in dangerous situations.

Currently officers can chase a vehicle if the driver is suspected of a felony or poses a traffic danger to others.

Des Moines police have been in nearly twice as many chases in the first three months of 2013 than in 2012.
