As gas prices soar, so do sales of E85.

E85 makes up more than 40 percent of all gasoline sales at one Iowa gas station, according to the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association out of Johnston, Iowa.

The Fast Stop in Cresco, Iowa is seeing particularly high sales from ethanol based gasoline.  Their sales of E85 have spiked up to 45 percent of its total gas sales.

The spike comes from a new blender pump that Fast Stop is using.  The blender pump allows the station to offer E0 (no ethanol), E10, E15, E20, E30 and E85.

Fast Stop installed the blender so that consumers would have a bigger choice on what they are putting in their gas tanks, and it is paying off.

“Fast Stop has become a magnet for flexible fuel vehicle owners in the area.  Consumers are ready and willing to purchase higher ethanol blends, retailers just need to make them available and price them right,” said Dave Sovereign, part owner of the Fast Stop in Cresco.

Iowa is a national leader for the production of renewable fuels.

The state currently has 41 ethanol refineries capable of producing more than 3.7-billion-gallons annually as well as 12 biodiesel facilities capable of producing 315-million-gallons each year.
