The Hy-Vee Triathlon kicks off Saturday and workers are out at Gray’s Lake making final preparations for the event.

Nine- year-old Lawson McLeod, the defending champ in the Hy-Vee IronKids triathlon, was out with his mom Friday morning scoping out the course.

Lawson will be competing Saturday to defend his title.  Since the age of four, he’s been involved in more than 100 triathlons.

Lawson’s mom says his siblings are competitive too, they each took home awards in their age groups last year. The family is from Florida, so they say they’re used to the heat.

The triathlon’s staff is being cautions with the high temperatures expected. Organizers are providing plenty of water for participants and spectators. Fans are urged to dress appropriately, bring umbrellas for shade, and wear hats.

The triathlon for the adults is Sunday.
