Mid-American Energy is warning customers about a phone scam that has made its way into Iowa.

People are posing as electric company workers, the company said.

These fake-employees call customers and tell them they are behind on their electric bills.  To avoid having their power shut off, the callers tell customers they have to buy a ‘Green Dot’ prepaid debit card to immediately pay off the balance due.

Caller ID showed the number as 888-201-7958.

Mid-American reminded customers to not give out any personal information.

If you receive a call from the scam artists, hang up.  Then, contact police and the utility company.
