Des Moines firefighters said they’re making progress on the warehouse fire on Scott Avenue but it will be days before the smoke clears.

The fire began burning Thursday evening.

Since the roof collapsed earlier, getting to the smoldering materials even more difficult.

The department is waiting for the city to bring in a demolition contractor before crews can get to the debris from and under the roof, according to Captain Steve Brown.

On Saturday there were about nine firefighters on the scene.

They have removed the side access panels on the south side of the building so they can get the burning materials out and hose them down.

Brown said he expects to have crews on the scene until Tuesday or Wednesday.
