It was a sea of purple in downtown Des Moines Wednesday.

Volunteers wearing purple handed out 2,000 donated purple carnations.

The group is hoping the flowers cause Iowans to stop and think about the impact of Alzheimer’s disease.

It causes a loss of brain functioning that worsens over time.

“1 in 3 seniors actually die with Alzheimer’s which is just amazing. So when we say with Alzheimer’s that actually means they could have died of something else but they also have Alzheimer’s,” says Melissa Kramer.  “And it’s something we need to stop.”

September is World Alzheimer’s Month.
