WRONG WAY: Driver In Fatal Crash Was Drunk

The Iowa State Patrol says the driver who caused a fatal wrong-way crash earlier this summer was intoxicated.

On June 9th, 24-year-old Megan Wakeham of West Des Moines was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of Interstate 80. Wakeham hit a vehicle carrying 20-year-old Jessie Leeper of Adair head-on near the Earlham exit.

Wakeham was pronounced dead on the scene. Leeper died from his injuries 10 days later.

The State Patrol says toxicology reports show Wakeham had a blood alcohol content of more than twice the legal limit at the time of the crash.
