Firefighters in Ankeny are remembering the lives lost in the September 11th attacks in 2001.

At a ceremony Wednesday morning, the department’s fire chief said it’s important to recognize all of the people affected, including: fire-service, law enforcement and civilians, along with the families who lost their loved ones.

Ankeny firefighters and their families, along with the city’s mayor paused for a prayer.

The department’s chaplain, Dennis Liberty, says if we can remember a few small things Wednesday, from what happened 12 years ago, we’re better because of it.

“Today, say a kind word to somebody.  You know that kind word could change their lives forever.  Give someone a warm hug that is close to you. Remember to say ‘I love you’ but most of all mean it.  Remember to hold hands with someone you love and cherish the moment, for it might not be there again,” says Liberty.
