School roof damaged in Grimes

The Polk County sheriff’s office says an elementary school in Grimes suffered wind damage to its roof.

Roofing material, insulation and debris were strewn all over the place at South Prairie Elementary School on 500 S James Street.

Dozens of students at their after-school daycare had to be taken to North Ridge Elementary. There were no injuries reported.

The Des Moines Register reports that the portion of roof damaged covered the cafeteria, kitchen, gymnasium and a music classroom.

Classes on Friday are cancelled At South Prairie while officials assess the damage.
