Des Moines police say a man was killed in a motorcycle accident on Grand Avenue Thursday morning.

The accident happened around 10:50 a.m. in the 2100 block of Grand, in front of the WHO Radio building. The motorcyclist was heading eastbound and struck the driver’s side door of a car that was trying to make a turn or a u-turn. The car was being driven by a 16-year-old male.

Police say initially they believed speed was a factor but through their investigation they determined it wasn't as big of a factor as they originally thought.

The speed limit where the crash occurred is 25 miles per hour.

Police say the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. He was taken to a local hospital by ambulance and pronounced dead. The man’s name has not been released.

Crews  blocked off Grand Avenue from 19th Street to 28th Street for several hours to investigate and clean up the crash but the road is now open.

Possible traffic charges will be determined pending the completion of the investigation.
