A Maquoketa man is paying tribute to his nephew, who was killed while serving in Iraq, with a very big gift to the community.

Bobby Johnson is turning the property that held his childhood home into a Veterans Memorial Park..

Donald D. Griffith died on March 11, 2005.

Johnson says the park will be a memorial for all veterans. He says there’s not much in Jackson County to remember veterans.

Johnson says the spot will be special to Griffith and his family.

“It’s the appropriate spot because this is one of the two houses that were sort of home to him,” says Johnson.

Johnson says he’s unsure how long the process will take, but he hopes to add a flag and plaque within the next couple of weeks.

A neighbor also said she would donate a bench in honor of her husband who is an Army veteran.
