First-degree murder charges against a man accused of killing a two-year-old are being dropped.

The Dubuque Telegraph Herald reported that the charge against 35-year-old Nicholas Reed was dismissed on Friday.

Reed was accused of killing Bentley Randall.

Police said the boy’s mother dropped him off with Reed before going to work on Nov. 232012.  When she returned she found her son injured and took him to the hospital.

Doctors said Bentley suffered severe burns and head trauma.  The child died days later.

The Dubuque County Attorney said the state no longer has sufficient evidence to prove Reed’s guilt.

Reed still faces child neglect and drug charges.
