Authorities have released the name of the man who died while in police custody Sunday.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is looking into the death of Michael Lee Zubrod, 39, who was taken into custody following a report of a domestic assault in northern Iowa.

The incident happened late Sunday night when a Worth County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to 208 4th Street North in Northwood on a call for a possible domestic assault. When the deputy arrived he heard a woman screaming for help. Once inside the home the deputy saw Zubrod severely beating a woman.

More deputies arrived on the scene and they attempted to subdue the Charles City resident. They were eventually able to handcuff Zubrod.

While handcuffed, Zubrod became unresponsive. Deputies tried to revive him but he died at the scene. The results of an autopsy are pending.

The DCI says the woman suffered stab wounds and blunt force injuries. She was taken by air ambulance to a hospital in Rochester, MN and remains in a serious condition.

Police are not releasing the name of woman at this time but say she was involved in a personal relationship with Zubrod.
