One of Iowa’s oldest drive-in movie theaters lost a competition this weekend.

The Valle Drive-In in Newton opened in 1949.  This weekend the theater lost an online vote to win a new digital projector.

The drive-in will now have to spend an estimated $80,000 to make the upgrade before movie distributors stop providing 35-millimeter film reels.

Despite the huge expense, owners told Radio Iowa the theater will make the upgrade and intends to remain open.

The Valle drive-in is one of just four remaining in Iowa.
