A semi-truck driver is charged with leaving the scene of a fatality accident after the Iowa State Patrol says he hit and killed a construction worker.

It happened close to the town of Liberty Center around 3:30 Thursday afternoon in a construction zone near the intersection of Highway 65 and Stone Street. The Iowa State Patrol says construction worker 27-year-old Christopher Wheeler was holding a stop sign and was hit-and-killed by a semi.

The crash report says the driver of the semi, 46-year-old Rubin Ward of Chicago, didn’t stop for Wheeler and swerved to avoid other vehicles. That’s when part of the semi’s trailer hit Wheeler.

Ward didn’t stop at the accident. A trooper eventually caught up with Ward on Highway 65 south of Indianola and arrested him.

Ward is being held in the Warren County Jail as the investigation continues.
