Iowa Republican U.S. senate candidate Matt Whitaker responded "I don't know" when asked whether Governor Terry Branstad is privately backing another Republican for the position. There have been rumors in some political circles Branstad would like his party to nominate a woman, State Senator Joni Ernst from Red Oak, even though publicly Branstad has said he will remain neutral in the contest. Long-time Democratic Senator Tom Harkin announced he won't seek another term when his seat expires next year.

Whitaker said, "I'd like to be Governor Branstad's candidate. I'd like to be all the elected's candidate."

Whitaker is part of a crowded early field that also includes: radio talk show host Sam Clovis, former Senator Chuck Grassley aide David Young and auto salesman Scott Schaben.

Whitaker is also a guest Sunday morning at 9:30 on Channel 13 for The Insiders.
