The federal government shutdown is being blamed for layoffs in Iowa.

According to the Iowa Department of Administrative Services, 49 employees with Iowa Workforce Development will be temporarily laid off effective Friday.

The layoffs affect employees that are members of AFSCME and were originally scheduled to begin after close of business on October 17th. Now, they’ll be implemented at the end of the business day Friday, October 11th.

The Iowa DAS and AFSCME say the change is an effort to avoid a permanent reduction in the workforce and minimize the shutdown’s effects.

Thursday, we learned the temporary layoff for 100 Iowa National Guard employees has also been moved up.

The layoffs are expected to last up to 60 days.
