West Des Moines' Mike McCoy returned to Iowa a USGA national champion.

McCoy described the win as a “whirlwind” adding that he has received hundreds of text messages and voice mails.

“It was pretty exciting,” McCoy told Channel 13. “That was my 38th USGA Championship so it’s been a long time coming.”

“Top of the list - to win a national champion – a lot of guys go their entire careers and never win a USGA national championship.”

The win means the 50-year old qualified for the US Masters.

McCoy says his son, Nate, a former ISU male athlete of the year, will be his caddy at the Masters in April.
