The Iowa Department for the Blind hosted an open house to celebrate a special day.

In 1964, Congress designated October 15th as White Cane Safety Day to honors the simple, yet highly effective tool used by the blind and visually impaired.

The department set up exhibits to show off its services before two panels held discussions.

“One of them is about just using of the white cane and where it takes us in life and one of them is more of an employment focus,” the department’s Rick Dressler said. “We are a PR orientated agency which means we are vocationally rehabilitation agency. We try to help the visually impaired attain and maintain employment.”

Several metro employers also attended the panel discussion.
