The Salvation Army’s 5K race starts Friday at 9 a.m. at Raccoon River Park in West Des Moines.

The Red Kettle Run costs $10 to participate or the contribution of five family size personal care items like bath soap or tooth paste.

The race marks the beginning of the Red Kettle Campaign.

The sound of bells ringing at metro businesses will start November 8th.

The Red Kettle Campaign accounts for about half of the Salvation Army’s annual operating budget.

The Salvation Army says it needs volunteers to fill 24,000 volunteer hours.

“It’s a great way to spread the Christmas cheer, get involved, go out and say’ Merry Christmas’ and give back to the community. It doesn’t require a lot of time,” says Amara Hartley.
