A semi fire blocked several lanes of Interstate-80 Friday evening.

The Iowa State Patrol say the back right tire of a semi hauling hogs blew out near mile marker 140 just east of the East Mixmaster at around 7:30 p.m.

What was left of the tire caught fire spreading to the semi’s trailer. Several hogs were killed in the fire and many more escaped onto the road.

State Patrol was forced to shoot several of the animals to stop them from running into the traffic.

Viewer Jessica Nisly took these pictures of the flames. She says she saw the pigs in the trailer.

DOT cameras showed traffic was heavily backed up due to the accident. Authorities  re-opened the road at around 8:40 p.m.
