A water main break has closed a major Des Moines intersection Thursday afternoon.

The main broke at around 1:30 p.m. on Southeast 14th and Hartford Avenue closing the latter west of SE 14th.

One lane of SE 14th is also closed.

Des Moines Water Works say the cause could be due to the infrastructure aging coupled with the season’s lower temperatures.

Authorities are asking drivers to avoid the area until 8 p.m.
