Police say a Des Moines man died after crashing his pickup into a house and running from the scene.

The incident happened around 9 p.m. Thursday night near the intersection of 12th Street and Enos Avenue.

Police say 51-year-old Edward Holt left the roadway, struck two parked cars and then rammed into the front porch of a home.

No one was inside the building but the damage to the porch is estimated at over $5,000.

The police report says Holt left the truck in drive and ran off.

Shortly after the accident, an officer responded to an unknown incident at a nearby Family Dollar store.

Holt had a medical issue and was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where he died.

Police say they found a crack cocaine pipe and prescription medication in the suspect’s truck.

β€œAt this point we don’t know the tox level of his blood, no appearance of trauma to his body on the outside, speed did not appear to be a factor in this collision,” Des Moines police Sgt. Jason Halifax said. “The autopsy will confirm or not confirm that.”

Officials say the toxicology tests for the autopsy will take a couple of weeks to complete.

Police say Holt doesn’t have a long arrest history, just some priors for drugs.
